
This course introduces the fundamental principles of machine design, emphasizing engineering analysis and the systematic design of mechanical elements. Topics include load and stress analysis, deflection and stiffness, working and design stresses, factor of safety, failure theories, fatigue, and design against static and fluctuating loads. The course covers the design and analysis of common machine elements, including screws, fasteners, threaded and bolted joints, welded and riveted joints, power screws, ball screws, guideways, and mechanical springs. It also introduces the fundamentals of mechanical mechanism design, enabling students to apply engineering principles in the design, selection, and evaluation of reliable, safe, and efficient mechanical systems.
